Will Self has a habit of embarking on ambitious fictional journeys he doesn't know how to complete. His American protagonist, Tom Brodzinski, shares his predicament. While holidaying on a sun-baked island continent, Tom inadvertently throws a marlboro onto the head of a local man. This small act involves him in the toils of an increasingly complicated legal system. Travelling inland with a paedophile Englishman, he meets untrustworthy officials, wacky sorcerers, aloof tribesmen and violent insurgents. Intended parallels with the Iraq war are unmistakable but remain confused.Self's distinctive vocabulary is part of the problem. Where there should be nuance or discrimination, he proffers a bower-bird display of brash bits and pieces. Gaudy Greek and Latin derivatives do nothing that their simpler synonyms couldn't do as well. УLenticularФ clouds are then said to resemble lenses - well, that's what УlenticularФ means. УHispid and viscidФ recur to describe a fly's legs but are superfluous. УGravellyФ portrays the sound of ice-chips in a drink and the burbling of a moa. The double application halves its graphic force.

Good stuff.Workman also kept calling out for forgotten lyrics from this one dude in the crowd who essentially became part of the band in a Dave Letterman-Paul Schaeffer way.But this is exactly the best thing about these kinds of semi-secret concerts.The room had a 1960 cabaret feel, a mood that has almost entirely been wiped off the face of the Earth by professional wrestling fans with flame tattoos.Not that there was anything "high culture" about the show yesterday. It's just that things don't tend to be that unassumingly nice much anymore.

In the 1980s an urban myth spread throughout the United States and even Europe, that marlboro miles packaging carried imagery related to the Ku Klux Klan[1]. The myth held that the Klan owned all, or a major part of, the Philip Morris company, and that Philip Morris himself was involved with the organization. And the symbols on the sides of the Marlboro represented 'K,K,K', as well as Marlboro upside down being seen, by some, to read 'Orobl Jew'. Also, when the Marlboro pack is upside down, as you cover the top half of the letters, you can allegedly see an image portraying a man and a midget being hanged; finally, if you look between the legs of the prancing horse the white outline resembles the infamous Ku Klux Klan hood. These allegations are unfounded - to own even 1% of the company would require over $500 m, and Philip Morris was a British tobacco merchant.

Anything in excess is not good for you, righteous indignation included.Every one of us can figure out what the smokers in my Smoking Room were getting, though we might describe it diversely - they were getting a chance to enjoy their recreation, gratify their habit, surrender to their addiction, indulge their vice, and practice their perversion. But what were the nonsmokers getting, to make them linger in that blue haze? Perhaps, in a passive way, they too found clarity and elevation. Or perhaps they were sniffing a particular blend of wariness and tolerance: wariness that raises an eyebrow at conventional wisdom, tolerance that gives people with unpopular pleasures a little room.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The maker of marlboro, the top selling cigarette in the United States, is introducing a type of smokeless tobacco in August, as smoking bans spread and more smokers quit. Altria Group Inc.'s Philip Morris USA unit will launch the product, called Marlboro Snus, into the Dallas/Fort Worth area.Snus are small pouches of dried tobacco that users place in the mouth. Unlike chewing tobacco or so-called "dip," Snus do not require spitting.Marlboro Snus, modeled after products that are popular in Sweden, will come in four varieties -- rich, mild, mint and spice, according to a release e-mailed to Reuters on Friday.Last year Philip Morris USA introduced Taboka, another smoke-free, spit-free tobacco pouch, in a test market in Indianapolis.
